The Decision
The excited boy knocked at the door of his father’s private workshop. He was eager to tell him about the invitation, and he held the diamond up high as he spoke. He wanted his father to know about the riches that awaited them. Also, he looked forward to visiting a world of strange creatures and gleaming jewels and gold and silver.
His father was concentrating on the creation of a new machine that could measure time. He was busy crafting a coiled spring to drive the mechanism when his son interrupted him. He listened to his son, looked briefly at the diamond and put it into his workbench drawer. Then he asked his son, “Why would I want to go to the dangerous and inhospitable Underworld? Why would I want to be in service of its treacherous and evil King? I have important work to complete on my time machine here. Things like gold, jewels, daggers and beads are not important to me.”
His son was quiet and thoughtful before he asked his father, “Don’t you yearn for the unknown, for adventure, for far away lands where the earth is different, with strange creatures, trees, and grasses—not like our world…. Please father, let’s go together into the unknown world beyond what we know. Let me learn and grow by going with you into the Underworld.”
The Wondersmith stopped his work, looked at his son, and sighed, “There is no end of curiosity in the human mind.” He knew his son wanted to explore different places. He finally said to him, “We will leave tomorrow before the dawn to travel to the Black Water and the Underworld beyond.”
