Mother Reacts

The boy quickly gathered his things and ran with his excited dog for home.

At his house, he burst into the kitchen with the gems clutched in his hands.

Brigit, his mother, busy sorting herbs for teas and medicines, looked up at him. She gently smiled at her son, the poet and melody-maker, and listened to his story, marveling at his excited recount of the strange creatures and their proposal.

She knew magic, saw the future and understood the danger of a trip to the Underworld.

She kissed her son’s forehead, wrapped the pearl in velvet cloth, and placed it with her crystals, scents, wands, and amulets in a small wooden chest in her secret place.

“Talk to your father about this adventure. He may not agree to leave his workshop and peaceful home to work and live under the hand of the King of the Underworld.”
