Building the Castle

The Wondersmith began by gathering his workers, a varied group that included a Djinn. The magical Djinn could change shape to fit any job that was given him, such as becoming a diamond laser one minute and an earth-mover the next.

The Wondersmith set them all to work building a small mountain as foundation for the giant stone fortress. This would be a castle big enough to be the home for the king and his fire-breathing dragons.

Ronan’s work was to play the new golden whistle the metal-workers had made for him. He played every day for the laborers, helping the time to fly by at the busy worksite. His songs reached the small pointed ears of a slender, elfish girl who visited often.

Noticing the beautiful young girl laughing and singing along with his tunes, he asked her name.

“It’s Fiona,” she shyly answered.

He took her hand, and they began to dance in circles around each other.

One day, after their dancing she took his hand and led him far away into a quiet wood. She revealed to him that she had a gift, the ability to hear whispers from a great distance. She had heard Balor tell the Gleaming One that he was pleased with the work progress. However, he planned to kill the Wondersmith after the castle was built.

Ronan was aghast. “Why would he do such a thing? Doesn’t he really like our work? He said he was pleased, so…why?”

“It’s because he doesn’t want the Wondersmith to build something greater for another king.”

Ronan quickly ran to tell his father.
