A Dangerous Invitation

“I am the son of the Wondersmith,” Ronan replied, shivering in the cold damp air.

The gleaming creature moved his arm forward, and a great buffalo-like beast appeared. On his massive back was a golden chest laden with precious metals, gems and pearls.

Upon command the beast knelt, bringing the treasure close to Ronan’s trembling hands.

The gleaming one spoke, his deep voice encouraging the frightened boy. “Take anything you want as a gift to your father from my King the Mighty Balor. My king wants your father to come to our world to build him a mighty fortress. He wants the world to see and know his greatness and to envy his power.”

The boy responded by thrusting both his hands into the chest, taking a large diamond in his left hand and a blue-green pearl in his right.

The group promptly disappeared into a sulphurous cloud.

The sun reappeared. Warm breezes of scented lilies filled the air.
